Project Spotlight: Award-Winning Healing at Seattle Children’s Hospital Building Care
When design excellence meets pediatric care, the result is more than just a building; it’s a beacon of hope. We are thrilled to spotlight our collaboration on the Seattle Children’s Hospital Building Care project. This local masterpiece has garnered prestigious recognition, including the 2023 AIA/AAH Healthcare Design Award and the 2023 AIA Seattle Honor Award.
Working alongside the visionary team at ZGF Architects, Lumicor provided high-performance material solutions that support ZGF’s “Discovery” theme, transforming a complex medical facility into an intuitive, wonder-filled environment for children and their families.
The Vision: Navigation through Wonder
ZGF’s approach focused on reducing the stress of navigation while fostering a sense of discovery. In a pediatric setting, color is both an aesthetic element and a language. The design team required materials that could translate vibrant, playful concepts into durable, architectural elements capable of withstanding the rigors of a world-class healthcare hub.
The Application: Lumicor in Motion
Our materials were utilized in two primary, high-impact installations that define the building’s interior identity:
1. Rhythmic Color: The Entry Fins
Behind the main reception desk, a series of colorful vertical fins creates a dynamic backdrop. These Lumicor resin fins provide a rhythmic play of light and transparency, greeting patients with a spectrum of color that feels both sophisticated and welcoming. By utilizing our lightweight, impact-resistant resin, the design achieved a floating, whimsical look without the safety concerns or weight of traditional glass.

2. Illumination & Art: Custom Printed Light Features
To further the “Discovery” theme, we were tasked with creating backlit Custom Artwork panels. These vertical installations feature artwork from ZGF printed on material and then encapsulated inside Lumicor resin.
- Backlit Brilliance: Integrated lighting brings the artwork to life, creating a glowing focal point that serves as both a wayfinding landmark and a calming distraction for young patients.
- Seamless Integration: The panels provide a smooth, easy-to-clean surface that protects the art while ensuring the installation meets strict clinical hygiene standards.
