FAQs

Q.WHAT IS LUMICOR?
Lumicor is a translucent material embedding textiles, papers, metals, natural foliage, wood veneers, and imagination into a number of high performance resins.

Q.HOW THICK IS LUMICOR?
Lumicor is available in many thicknesses between 1/16” to 1”.

Q.WHAT SHEET SIZES ARE AVAILABLE?
Lumicor comes in standard 4’ x 8’ sheets and custom sizes of 4’ x 10’, and 5’ x 10’.

Q.WHAT IS THE MINIMUM ORDER SIZE FOR LUMICOR?
Minimum order for standard 4’ x 8’ size is 1 sheet on all orders of .472" or less. Custom sheets require a minimum order of 5 sheets or more depending on thickness and core material.

Q.WHAT CAN I MAKE WITH LUMICOR?
Lumicor is extremely versatile. It can be used in flat sheet and molded application. In many cases Lumicor can be used in place of glass, plastic, solid surface materials (*Corian) as used for Vanity's and Wet Bar areas, high-pressure laminate and wood.

Some of the many uses include:
Vanity Countertops
Table tops
Cabinet doors
Space division
Office work stations
Light diffusion panels
Retail Displays
Back-lit flooring
Wall surfaces
Molded sink bowls

Anywhere light, color, texture and form can enhance an environment.

Q.HOW MUCH DOES LUMICOR WEIGH?
Lumicor is approximately half the weight of glass in the same thickness.

Q.WILL LUMICOR TURN YELLOW OVER TIME?
Lumicor made with acrylic resin performs extremely well when exposed to UV sunlight. Over the 50 year history of acrylic, rigorous testing has revealed that standard acrylic blocks up to 70% of UV light. Not only will acrylic Lumicor remain clear over decades of service, it will help protect the core from fading due to UV exposure.

Q.WILL LUMICOR SCRATCH?
As with any resin material, Lumicor will scratch when exposed to aggressive abrasion. However, the acrylic Lumicor surface is easily refinished from a matte to high gloss in minutes with standard polishing discs (see fabrication guide).

Q.CAN I USE SCREWS WITH LUMICOR?
It is recommended to use through bolts in place of screws when assembling projects with Lumicor sheets. The fabrication techniques for Lumicor are very similar to acrylic sheet.

Q.CAN LUMICOR BE THERMOFORMED?
Lumicor can be thermoformed, vacuum and drape formed into a wide variety of forms and shapes. Every product in the line can accommodate gradual simple curves. Some products can accept deeper 3 dimensional draws such as sink bowls. Each Lumicor product will have its own unique thermoforming properties and will need to be tested for each application.

Q.CAN LUMICOR BE REFINISHED?
Using 3M Trizact refinishing disks, Lumicor can be renewed to a matte or high gloss in minutes, just as a solid surface product such as *Corian. Lumicor can also be refinished to a matte effect using **Scotchbrite abrasive pads. Edges can be brought to a high gloss finish using flame-polishing techniques.

Q.IS LUMICOR EASY TO FABRICATE?
Lumicor can be fabricated with common woodworking tools. Table saws, jigsaws, routers, palm sanders, and files can all be used to work Lumicor.

Q.WHO FABRICATES LUMICOR?
The fabricator base best suited to work with Lumicor are plastics fabricators, and solid surface fabricators (*Corian). The same tools, blades router bits, adhesives, and techniques used in solid surface fabrication apply directly to Lumicor.

Q.WHAT ADHESIVES CAN BE USED TO BOND LUMICOR TOGETHER?
The following adhesives work well with Lumicor:

IPS Weld On 42, 40, 16, 4
Gruber clear methacrylate
ACS Acrybond clear
3M Fastbond 30, 40 contact cement.
Hot melt glues
3M VHB two sided tape

Q.DOES LUMICOR COMPLY WITH THE MODEL BUILDING CODES?
Yes, the acrylic used in Lumicor products passes the following ASTM tests for use as a light transmitting plastic in chapter 26 of the UBC and IBC model building codes.

ASTM D 635 Must burn at a rate less than 2.5” / min. C2 or CC2 rating.
ASTM D 2843 Smoke density rating is less than 75%.
ASTM D 1929 Self-ignition temp must exceed 650 °F.

Additional materials used in Lumicor panels pass the test requirements for ASTM E 84 as follows:

Glass Class I Burn index 0 – 25, smoke developed index 450 or less.

Q.WHAT CAN I DO ABOUT STATIC ELECTRICITY WHEN WORKING WITH LUMICOR?
To counteract electrostatic charges that might attract dust and fine particles, an antistatic spray product is recommended.

Q.WHAT CAN I USE TO CLEAN AND POLISH LUMICOR?
For cleaning and polishing light scratches, the following products may be used:

- Novus Plastic Polish Systems www.novuspolish.com
