Questions about Lumicor and LEED®

Q. What is Leed?

The Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design (LEED) Green Building Rating System™ is the nationally accepted benchmark for the design, construction, and operation of high performance green buildings. LEED gives building owners and operators the tools they need to have an immediate and measurable impact on their buildings’ performance. LEED promotes a whole-building approach to sustainability by recognizing performance in five key areas of human and environmental health: sustainable site development, water savings, energy efficiency, materials selection, and indoor environmental quality.

Q. Does Lumicor sell a Leed Certified product?

No. Only building projects (not products) are eligible for LEED certification. Using Lumicor R4 products can help builders earn credits toward LEED certification. R4 products are certified to contain certain levels of recycled material. Quick reference:

  • •  R4 products are certified for recycled material
  • •  R4 can help earn LEED credits toward LEED certified projects
  • •  Projects can earn LEED certification

Q. What are the benefits of building a Leed Certified project?

There are many environmental, economic, health and community benefits to building green. LEED gives building owners and operators the tools they need to have an immediate and measurable impact on their buildings’ performance. LEED-certified buildings have reduced operating costs, healthier and more productive occupants, and conserve our natural resources.

Q. Are there tax breaks for being Leed Certified?

Some local jurisdictions have implemented tax breaks. For more information, visit the Government Resources pages at www.usgbc.org.

Q. How do I qualify for Leed Certification?

LEED certification is a designation awarded to sustainable design projects. A project is a viable candidate for LEED certification if it can meet all prerequisites and achieve the minimum number of points to earn the certified level of LEED project certification. To earn certification, a building project must meet certain prerequisites and performance benchmarks (“credits”) within each category. Projects are awarded Certified, Silver, Gold, or Platinum certification depending on the number of credits they achieve. This comprehensive approach is the reason LEED-certified buildings have reduced operating costs, healthier and more productive occupants, and conserve our natural resources.

Q. How do I register a Leed Project?

Project registration is the first step towards earning LEED certification for your building project. Once you register, you’ll have access to LEED-Online and the LEED credit interpretations database. For more information on project documentation, credit interpretations, and certification visit the LEED Certification page.

Q. Is there an international Leed rating system?

The World Green Building Council has been developed to represent Green Building Councils throughout the world. There are currently nine member countries six of which have their own rating systems. We haven’t explored these yet.

  • •  United States – LEED
  • •  Canada – LEED Canada
  • •  United Kingdom – BREEAM
  • •  India – in progress
  • •  Japan – CASBEE (Comprehensive Assessment System for Building Environmental Efficiency)
  • •  Mexico
  • •  New Zealand
  • •  Taiwan
  • •  United Arab Emirates

Q. What is the US Green Building Council?

The U.S. Green Building Council (USGBC) is a non-profit composed of leaders from every sector of the building industry working to promote buildings that are environmentally responsible, profitable and healthy places to live and work. Its more than 11,000 member organizations and the network of 75 regional chapters are united to advance our mission of transforming the building industry to sustainability. The U.S. Green Building Council’s core purpose is to transform the way buildings and communities are designed, built and operated, enabling an environmentally and socially responsible, healthy, and prosperous environment that improves the quality of life.
